Year 2

Welcome to our Year 2 class page

PE kits are needed in school all week from now on.  PE is Tuesday and Thursday or Friday afternoon. Thank you!

Super running and great team work at our Key stage 1 Sports day last week.  Trusting others to lead us to the finish line - What a great guided race!

We have been making maps of Knowsley Safari park.  We worked very carefully to include all the features.  Can you spot Dylan's cafe?

Skippy John

Today we learned to skip with John.  We loved the cool skipping ropes!  Bounce...bounce...bounce!

What talented girls we have in Year 2!

Knowsley Safari Park

Year 2 had the most amazing day at Knowsley Safari Park learning about African habitats.  We enjoyed the seal and birds of prey shows and getting up close to the wonderful giraffes.

St Mary's - Pentecost

Year 2 had a lovely time at St Mary's - thank you.

Five Minutes' Peace - Jill Murphy

To celebrate 30 years of Jill Murphy's fantastic book, 'Five minutes' Peace' Year 2 and some of our super adults in school dressed up as Mrs Large and imagined what we would do if we had five minutes by ourselves.

We made a big book of our thoughts.  Thank you Mrs D for making a wonderful bath for us to sit in!

Into the Forest

We are about to read this amazing book by Anthony Browne.  Our first lesson involved the children making predictions about the text using an illustration from the front cover.  To ignite our imaginations and get a real feel for the smells, textures and sounds in a forest; we went for a walk around our very own forest area and what a lovely sunny afternoon it was too!

Dinostar - Dinosaur experience

Today we had a visit from Mr Plater a dinosaur enthusiast who has his own Dinosaur museum in Hull.  He brought us some amazing artefacts to look at including a real dinosaur egg! We touched the egg and listened very carefully to it and thankfully it didn't hatch after all of these years!

Look at the pictures to see what fun we had.

Congratulations Jemima on passing your drama exam with a Merit.  We are very proud of you.

Child of Excellence

Congratulations Daisy and Frankie our Children of Excellence for the theme of Forgiveness.

World Book Day

We love reading in Year 2 and what a wonderful day we had dressing up and reading with our Year 6 friends.  Lots of the children in Year 2 have completed the reading challenge that has been taking place this term.  Well done, Year 2!

Science week

Year 2 had lots of fun last week during Science week.  They became 'Forensic scientists', investigating and solving the crime and learning about DNA and sources of evidence at a crime scene.  They explored craters on the moon and investigated which ball would make the largest crater and even flew rockets!! What fantastic scientists!

SCIENCE - Baking Bread

Year 2 were the envy of the school on Thursday afternoon, when the delightful smell of baking bread drifted from our classroom.

We made bread as part of our Science topic about materials to show the changes caused by heating the ingredients.  We played with the dough to investigate forces, changing the shape of the dough by twisting, rolling, stretching and squashing.

The verdict on our bread was: delicious, scrumptious, yummy and tasty!

What an exciting playtime the children had on Friday eating their freshly baked bread!

Thank you Jemima for bringing in your book about St Paul's Cathedral.  What super art work too!!

Journey to the Centre of the Brain

On Tuesday  (26.1.2016) we watched an amazing performance about the brain and how it works.  The children took home a book mark detailing 9 follow up films the company had produced.

'Snuggle up with a book'

This week we have introduced reading blankets to the KS1 playground at play times to keep the children cosy while reading.  They were a great hit!!  Super cosy reading!

Play in a Day

A big thank you to Barry from Altru Drama for a fantastic 'Play in a Day' last Thursday (211.1.16) A big well done to Year 2 who were FANTASTIC, confident performers!

They made me so proud recalling lots of facts about the Fire of London.

Fun Maths Roadshow

We loved our session at the Fun Maths Roadshow on Thursday.  Thank you Liverpool University Mathematics Society Outreach team.

We learned lots of things but most importantly to quote Luke Lebrocq, 'Maths is great!'

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  We hope you has a relaxing holiday and lots of fun.

What a busy first week back!  Already we have worked with the School Health Team to learn about healthy eating and dental health.

Also this week the children will be taking part in a Maths Roadshow run by Liverpool University outreach team.

On Friday we go to Halewood Leisure Centre for our first swimming session.  A copy of the swimming letter is on our classroom door.
P.E. kit - Thurday
Swimming kit - Friday

Tuesday night is reading comprehension night - please help your child to read through the text sent home and discuss what it is about.  We will go through it together on a Wednesday and it really helps the children to feel more confident if they have pre-read the text.

Book bugs continues on Monday nights.  Please encourage your child to attend as it will make a difference to their reading.
Please keep practising the Year 1 sounds and previous week's Year 2 spellings.  Websites such as Phonics play phase 6 resources will help the children with Year 2 spellings.
Thank you for your continued support, Mrs Davidson

Children in Need 13.11.2015

Wonderful display for Black History Week - clothing and culture.

Last Wednesday (4.11.15) Year 2 had a wonderful day being Young Authors and learning how to make 'E' books using the 'Book Creator' APP with Alan Ellis from Knowsley's City Learning Centre. We included audio introductions using 'tellegami' and added pictures, text and voice overs. During the afternoon some children also experimented with 'green screen' technology. Our theme was The Great Fire of London. I was very proud of the children and their hard work and Mr Ellis, commented "What a lovely class with such a strong sense of independence."

Mollie trying out the 'green screen' reading Samuel Pepy's diary.

Black History Week 2015

This week Year 2 have studied clothing and culture. We read the story 'Masai and I' and took our inspiration from there, learning all about the Masai people of East Africa. We made our own Masai children and even made jewellery with beads for them to wear. We can't wait to display them outside our classroom. We'll add a picture to our page when it's finished.

Also during Black History Week Year 2 took part in an African dance workshop. Look at our superb dancers below:

Mrs Dukalska and I would like to say how pleased we are with the way the children have settled into Year 2.  Already they are working very hard and are producing some super work.

In Year 2 we love to keep you up to date with what the children have been doing in class.  So we have attached a document which gives a little taster of what we've been doing so far along with information about book bugs, homework, spellings and PE.
