Intent

Intent of our Reading Curriculum

R-A-I-S-E

Retention – Application – Inspiration – Success for Everyone

Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22 v6

It is our intent at Halewood C of E Primary Academy, to promote a strong reading culture where pupils share our passion for and love of reading.

We aim that all pupils will learn to be fluent, accurate and confident readers prepared for adult life.  Our children will develop the necessary skills to understand, analyse, compare and express their thoughts, emotions and opinions about texts and authors they have read.  We recognise the importance of both oral and written communication and promote broad and high-level vocabulary across the curriculum.

In order for pupils to become independent readers, reading at the age-expected standard, we provide a broad range of challenging, diverse and high-quality literature (including classics, poetry and non-fiction texts).  Drama, illustrations and visual literacy will support reading to ignite the children’s imaginations and bring literature to life.

At Halewood CofE we want all of our children to leave us with a love of reading and an ability to go into further education reading proficiently.
